This risk can be almost eliminated if both the mother and her baby are provided with antiretroviral drugs as early as possible in pregnancy and during the period of breastfeeding. [25] The risk of perinatal transmission of hepatitis B can be as high as 30 percent. [26] The risk of mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis C during pregnancy or delivery is about 5 percent, and much higher among women who are coinfected with HIV.
